One of the representative auroral emission lines that radiates from F-region heights and is measurable on the ground is the 777.4 nm line from excited atomic oxygen. This line has been adopted, along with another E-region emission line, for example 427.8 nm, to estimate the mean energy and total energy flux of precipitating auroral electrons. The influence of emissions from part of the molecular ...
    • An automated auroral detection system using deep learning: real-time operation in Tromsø, Norway

Nanjo, Sota; Nozawa, Satonori; Yamamoto, Masaki; Kawabata, Tetsuya; Johnsen, Magnar Gullikstad; Tsuda, Takuo T.; Hosokawa, Keisuke (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-05-31)
The activity of citizen scientists who capture images of aurora borealis using digital cameras has recently been contributing to research regarding space physics by professional scientists. Auroral images captured using digital cameras not only fascinate us, but may also provide information about the energy of precipitating auroral electrons from space; this ability makes the use of digital cameras ...

We have quantitatively evaluated generation mechanisms of a sporadic sodium layer (SSL) based on observational data obtained by multiple instruments at a high-latitude station: Ramfjordmoen, Tromsø, Norway (69.6° N, 19.2° E). The sodium lidar observed an SSL at 21:18 UT on 22 January 2012. The SSL was observed for 18 min, with a maximum sodium density of about 1.9 × 1010 m−3 at 93 km with a 1.1 km ...
    • A statistical study of convective and dynamic instabilities in the polar upper mesosphere above Tromsø

Nozawa, Satonori; Saito, Norihito; Kawahara, Takuya D.; Wada, Satoshi; Tsuda, Takuo T.; Maeda, S; Takahashi, Toru; Fujiwara, Hitoshi; Narayanan, V L; Kawabata, T; Johnsen, Magnar Gullikstad (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-02-15)
We have studied the convective (or static) and dynamic instabilities between 80 and 100 km above Tromsø (69.6° N, 19.2° E) using temperature and wind data of 6 min and 1 km resolutions primarily almost over a solar cycle obtained with the sodium lidar at Tromsø. First, we have calculated Brunt–Väisälä frequency (N) for 339 nights obtained from October 2010 to December 2019, and the Richardson ...
